Day 01 Delhi
Arrive Delhi. Met and transferred to the hotel.
Day 02 Delhi
A full day tour including a cycle rickshaw ride through the 300 year old Chandni Chowk market, the Indian version of a departmental store; the Jama Masjid or the Friday mosque where you get an unparralled view of Old Delhi from the southern minaret; and Raj Ghat a simple yet stunning memorial to Mahatma Gandhi.
The afternoon we visit the Qutub Minar the elegant minaret begun in 1199; Humayun's Tomb, the first Mughal mausoleum in India; and the crafts museum which displays a superb collection of Indian handicraft in a natural setting. Master craftsman can be seen working in the courtyard. In the evening we have a welcome dinner at a roof top restaurant in the upmarket Hauz Khas Village
Day 03 to 05 Delhi / Guwahati / Kaziranga
We take an internal flight today to north east India to Guwahati, where we are met and drive approximately three hours to Kaziranga National Park. The park sprawls over 165 sq. miles of grassland, close tangled throny rattan cane and tall elephant grass. It is borderd by the Bhramaputra river on one side and the Karbi Anglong Hills. This reserve was created in 1926, primarily to save the one horned rhino from virtual extinction. Apart from the rhino, it is also home to wild buffalo, sambar, swamp deer, hog deer, wild pig and the rare hoolock gibhon. Visits to the waterholes will reveal the rich avian life of the park which include water fowl, black necked storks, fishing eagles, storks and a pelicanry. In the river we will see the otters, dolphins and gharial, a fish eating crocodile, which is indegenous to India.
During our three night stay here we will visit the park on elephant back, jeep and go on nature walks, accompanied by Mr. Barua, a leading naturalist and the owner of Wildgrass Lodge, where we will be staying overnight. Since the park is set in the "tea bowl" of India you may wish to visit a tea garden and the surrounding tribal villages.
Day 06 Kaziranga / Guwahati / Delhi We return to Delhi and stay overnight at the Imperial.
Day 07 Delhi / Agra / Bharatpur
Rising early we transfer to the station to board the Shatabdi Express to Agra. On arrival, we stop to admire the Taj Mahal and continue to Bharatpur where we will be staying at the Laxmi Vilas Palace.
Day 08 Bharatpur
Keoladeo Ghana National Park popularly known as Bharatpur whose 29 sq. Km area is one of the world's most famous and interesting wetland area. A haven for winter migrants and an important rookery for summer breeders, the range of bird activity is stunning. Among the approximately 385 species found here are waterfowl, waders, birds of prey, owls, woodpeckers, flycatchers, minivets, shrikes and babblers. Visits to the parks are by cycle rickshaws and country boats.
Day 09 Bharatpur / Ranthambore
We drive today to the premier tiger sanctuary in Rajasthan, Ranthambore National Park. Covering 410 sq. kms, Ranthambore runs along the easternmost spur of the Aravallis to the Vindhya ranges. It has both the fort and the wildlife sanctuary also known as Sawai Madhopur. Set in dry forests, the area covers rocky hills and open valleys with lush vegetation around the lakes. This wide range of vegetation is home to a rich variety of bird and animal life. The best tiger sightings have been reported from this park. The excellent birdlife includes the serpent eagle among the birds of prey and a large variety of migratory water birds. We arrive in time for an evening visit to the park. Overnight at Sawai Madhopur Lodge, a former royal hunting lodge.
Day 10 Ranthambore National Park
A full day at the park would include morning and evening visits to the park by private jeep accompanied by a naturalist and forest guards, nature walks and a visit to the imposing fort which attracts the leopard and a fascinating collection of birds.
Day 11 Ranthambore National Park / Jaipur
We visit the park early in the morning before departing after breakfast for a three hour drive for the city of Jaipur. On arrival we transfer to the Samode Haveli.
Day 12 Jaipur / Ahmedabad
A short drive this morning takes us to the fort palace at Amber which is approached on elephant back. In the afternoon we tour the city palace, the Jantar Mantar the ancient observatory and the Hawa Mahal or the Palace of the Winds and walk through the colourful Johori Bazaar. Late evening we transfer to the airport for our flight to Ahmedabad. Overnight at the Ummed.
Day 13 Ahmedabad / Raan of Kutch
In the state of Gujarat, the Raan is a complete contrast to the parks we have visited during this trip. A featureless expanse of flat land, dotted with sparse scrub and salt pans it supports a large number of flamingo, birds of prey, cranes and rarieties such as the houbara bustard. This is the only home of the highly endangered Indian wild ass and black buck. We stay in village style huts at Camp Zainabad where the owner is a leading naturalist who has an extraordinary knowledge of the wildlife which inhabits the Raan as well as the tribal population of this area.
Day 14 Raan of Kutch
A full day at the park visiting the surrounding area including the tribal villages.
Day 15 Raan of Kutch / Ahmedabad / Delhi
Departing after an early safari we drive to Ahmedabad airport for our flight to Delhi or Bombay. On arrival we are transferred to the international airport for our onward flight.
